Learning Event: Same Disaster – different Effects – different Strategies. Gender Issues and the Position of Women in Climate and Disaster Resilience
Hazardous events affect women and girls, boys and men differently. Research shows that overall, women and girls are not only disproportionally affected by disasters linked to natural hazards, but they also face strong gender-specific barriers in disaster recovery; their specific needs, leadership potential and contributions are frequently ignored and unleveraged in resilience building, Climate Change Adaptation (CCA), and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
The two-day Learning Event aims at understanding the Gender Dimension in ‘Natural’ Disasters, working with Gender and DRR approaches and tools. This provides the necessary foundations for effective DRR work and vice-versa, can add value to Gender programing with integrating the DRR perspective. Gender is intersecting with several other factors of discrimination and exclusion. In view of Switzerland’s Commitment to Leaving no one behind (LNOB), the training will also look at the intersections between Gender and LNOB in Disaster Risk Management (DRM).
During the workshop we would like to jointly address the following questions:
- Why and how are genders affected differently by disasters linked to natural hazards?
- How can the different impacts be overcome through the implementation of gender-responsive DRM? How can a disaster event offer a window of opportunity to overcome
- Why and how are genders affected differently by disasters linked to natural hazards?
- How can the different impacts be overcome through the implementation of gender-responsive DRM? How can a disaster event offer a window of opportunity to overcome gender inequalities?
- How do we integrate gender and DRM into project planning, implementation and monitoring?
Experts on Gender, LNOB, DRR and Climate Change experts working on different levels and for different organizations (SDC, NGOs, UN, etc.) will be present, and the event will be illustrated by various case studies from around the world.
Target audience:
- Programme Officers from NGO and SDC, HH and IZA
- Sector experts working on DRR, Climate Change, Gender and/or LNOB from NGO and SDC, HH and IZA
Registration
The event is limited to 30 participants. If the COVID situation does not allow for a face-to-face event, the event will be postponed to spring 2022.
